Q: “Are you surprised at the success you’ve had?

A: “Yeah, I just feel very fortunate, very lucky, you know, yeah, because I've been playing like this for a long time. I mean, I just didn't start in '74, but you know, I think that the explanation for it, a little explanation, is that the guitar has become very popular, you know, in our culture so … Everybody has a guitar, everybody plays, and everybody knows a little bit about it and so now, you know, one guy comes along and plays a certain way and there … and all the guitarists, amateur, and otherwise, go “Well, he does this and he does that.” I think that might even account for my playing solo because I do it more than most "jazz players" do it, you know.”
