Q: “Why did you ever choose the piano in the first place; or in fact, did you choose it?”

A: Jay McShann: “No, I didn't choose piano. I wanted to play the horn, but the folks were too poor, you know, and they couldn't afford a horn if I made them. So I figured that well, I just better take the next best thing that I can run into. You know, you could always run into a piano at school where you could practice on or fool around on, you know.”

Interviewer: “Or the church piano.”

Jay McShann: “Yeah, the church, you know, then I'll wound up playing for BYPU, you know, in Union services and Sunday school like that, so then I got a chance to, you know, fool around on the piano like that.”
