Q: “How important is it to study music in order to play jazz?”
A: “I would think that if a person didn't study music now, he would be a very, very, very inferior jazz player because jazz has advanced. When I was 21 years old, I was working with a big band and I didn't know my head from a hole on the ground. And I say that because if you take a musician, 21 years old now, that's been playing music and he knows a thousand times much more music than I did at that time, you see. And the books and things that's available for the availability of jazz and knowhow of it, it's much easier for them to get now than when I was coming up.”
