Q: “Is that an essential thing for you, in your music – the fun of it, the joy of it?”

A: “Yes, yes. When the joy is gone, it’s no more … there’s no more fun in it, you know. Jazz is a lot of fun to play and when that ceases, when jazz ceases to be fun and a task, then it’s not jazz, you know. But it’s really, you know … the Europeans, jazz is subsidized over there by the government. Like the culture- like the arts are, you know. It is considered an art in Europe, but it’s not considered an art in America.”
