Q: “Going to play with [the George Shearing Quintet] is like going to graduate school, isn’t it?”

A: “There used to be. We used to... the alumni always used to come out to hear the new band when we go through a town. So one night in New York, we had a Gary Burton and three guitar players, two vibe players and a drummer sitting in the front row of the concert that we played in and we all got together after and decided that six months with the George Shearing Quintet is almost the equivalent of two years at Julliard for practical working knowledge.”
