Q: “I don’t think – at least I’ve never heard – that your leaving Chuck Mangione’s after what, seven or eight years has anything to do with a blowup in the band or anything like that. It was just kind of time for you to do what you wanted to do yourself, right?”

A: “That's right, yeah. As a matter of fact, we embraced and wished each other the best the last night and it was kind of a sad parting. But I feel that the decision to leave was a good decision because my attitude has just change. My approach to improvisation has gotten, not careless, but I'm more willing to take the risks lately than I think I ever was when I was working with Chuck. Because ... well, I don't know why. I really shouldn't say it because and set myself up to give a complete explanation for why. But I just feel more adventurous now in this group than I ever did in Chuck's band.”
