Q: “Were you aware as a young man that there was a difference between the [Duke] Ellington band and the [Count] Basie band and the [Jimmie] Lunceford band than say, the Glen Miller Orchestra or Blue Barron or whatever; or was it all just music?”
A: “Yeah, I wasn't really so conscious of it on that level because I like all the bands and then I had my favorites, you know. Let's say, a band like Blue Baron I didn't like very much. You know, a band like Duke Ellington I liked immensely. It was just a question of the style of the band and the approach and the content, you know. And I didn't have to make qualitative judgment. So it was just a question of one preference over another.”
