Q: “How long would it take you to write a chart, say something like Nature Boy that lasted three minutes on the record?”

A: “That, I don't know. That's one of my favorite charts, maybe because there's a lot of blood in it, I guess, that it took me a long time. There's a lot of chord structures there. They have a lot of optional areas in which to go and I think I tried to find all of them. But I know that it can take me three days, three full days, to write an 8-bar intro until I find something that I really feel is new and it sets me off and then the body of the song may take another week or so or it may come more quickly. But one of the things after writing so many albums, for 32 albums and all those choral arrangements, I have tried honestly in all the years not to copy myself.”
