Q: “It’s very difficult to convince people sometimes that they should be prepared to pay a ten dollar per set cover charge or to buy a record or two and not copy it from a friend…”

A: “Gene Lees: Well, there's nothing that's kind of heartbreaking to the musician say, "I just love your last album. A friend taped it for me.” You know, ten bucks' cover charge. When you think what lunch ... I just had lunch on the way down here. I had a very ordinary pub lunch. Okay, it was all right. I enjoyed it with a glass of milk. And it cost me $9.15. That's lunch and they think ten bucks is a heavy music charge in a club.”

Interviewer: “Yeah.”

Gene Lees: “It isn't, not when you're looking or think, what does a drink costs?”
