Q: “Now, when you were traveling around, I imagine – as you said – that most of your time was spent in traveling and waiting in airports and things. Did you get to hear much jazz in other places? Say you were in London for four days or something, would you get around to hear other people play very much?”

A: “I always tried to hear as much as I could, but that would apply in English-speaking countries more so. I just found myself so handicapped in European countries where I didn't speak the language and I didn't even know how to get to where the jazz was or how to ask where it was or … It was just too much of a handicap to overcome. And quite often our time was so short that it all we saw was an airport and a concert hall and a bus or a plane, you know.”
