Q: “Do you make any distinctions between kinds of music? Between ragtime or jazz or popular music? When you listen to a piece of music do you say ‘That is jazz’ or do you say ‘That’s music.’? Or, do you say ‘That is a show tune’, or do you break them down? What’s the difference between say, ragtime and jazz?”

A: “Do I make any distinction? Oh, yes, yes, yes, I do. Yeah. A syncopation is very intricate, if you play it … Not the way they write it now, but the way you take James Pea, Willie the Lion, Fats Waller and those fellows, see. And the way they play it, it's very hard to play that way, see. And that's different and it sound is different.”
