Q: “You must’ve gone out of your way a bit to hear jazz because it’s not a popular music form with a lot of the younger people and certainly was less so eight or ten years ago…”

A: “Yeah, but I guess what happened to me was that I had a friend who was a year older than I and she had a sister who was two years older than the both of us and we used to come tag along with her and she was very much into jazz and so consequently, we were exposed to a lot of jazz artists. I didn't listen to a lot of jazz at home because when I was thirteen to sixteen years old, I listened to rock music. You know, I listened to the Temptations and Dusty Springfield, people like that, you know. And I enjoyed it. I think that's another part of my background, you know, where I think in terms of my understanding and my interpretation of popular music. I got it from some of the rock artists.”
