Q: “You did tour for a while – Gene Krupa pops to mind. You were actually on the road as a member of the Gene Krupa quartet or quintet…”

A: “Right, but mostly I worked around New York. I didn't work with too many named leaders. I worked with all the guys who work for them, like I worked for a whole lot of guys out of Duke Ellington's Band. I worked with Lawrence Brown. I worked with Ben Webster, Wellman Braud, Sonny Greer, with this one and that one, with a lot of guys from Basie's Band like Buck Clayton and Dicky Wells and you know, all the sidemen, that's who I worked with, you know.”
