Q: “You’ve played with a lot of people who might surprise people who do put boxes around the styles and that…”

A: Dick Wellstood: “Well, in New York, at the same time when I was a kid that I was listening to James P. Johnson or Willie "The Lion" Smith, still I used to hear Bud Powell. I couldn't help it, Earl Gardner who was modern at that time and Lennie Tristano and you name it because they were just around all the time. So that influenced me, too. I mean, I heard Art Tatum. It's hard to ignore Art Tatum when you hear him, you know, let alone Bud Powell, so...”
