Q: “What was the Boston area like when you were growing up? Was there much musical activity then?”

A: “I never played in Boston much. I'm from Woonsocket, Rhode Island and worked around there in a little town called Milford, Massachusetts where Boots Mussuli was from and probably all Italians in Milford and every other guy in that town is a musician, you see. One time I think, just before my time, maybe World War II, there were about ten guys in that little town and they were all with bands, Teddy Powell and Stan Kenton and really a lot of musicians, a lot of interests in the music there. And Boston, I only go to Boston to go and see a ball game because I got to New York really kind of early and I work much more in New York than I did in Boston until recently, but I like Boston very much.”
