Q: “[Can’t Take You Nowhere] is a performance recording you did for Fantasy Records a few years ago and it’s one of your songs but you show the genesis of it in the liner notes…”

A: Well, this song is called 'Can't Take You Nowhere', not 'I Can't Take You Nowhere', but 'Can't Take You Nowhere'. The lyric and title are by me. The main melody is a blues line by the influential drummer, Tiny Kahn, called 'TNT', which in turn was drawn from part of a Lester Young solo in a Count Basie record. Then, because it seemed natural, I grafted on the 'Shout' chorus from Al Cone's 'Tiny's Blues', which I remember first hearing on a Columbia 78 by Chubby Jackson's Big Band. Is this confusing enough?”
