Q: “What is rhythm section playing all about? You’ve done an awful lot of that, in fact this solo playing is a more recent addition to your arsenal…”
A: “It's something that I really had to learn to do to be able to hang in New York when other things weren't happening. I guess, I can sum up rhythm section playing the best by telling you something that I heard James Woody once say. He was with a rhythm section who were totally not in his bag, but in their own, and he had to go with this. So I had gone to see him and he got off the stand and it so happened that there was a table beside me who he knew these people and so he stopped there first and he was speaking with them, and these people were repulsing, "James, you know, this is not your kind of rhythm section. Why? How are you getting around this?" And he said, "You know, I learned long ago that the best thing about a leader is being a sideman." So that's really kind of what rhythm section playing is all about, its to learn to subjugate yourself to what's going on and yet, within your personalities create some sort of definition in a blend that would be substantial to the artist to kind of sit on. Then when it's your turn, you jump out there and do your smart, cute thing.”
