Q: “I bet you had a few worries when you first left the security of the Basie band to work on your own but it’s never been too much of a problem, has it?”

A: “Yeah, well, I was kind of... you know, when I did lead the band, I said, "Well, I'm going to try to stay, you know, in New York and just play in, you know, maybe in some little club or something like that." But the first day I left, I went to work with Lucky Milander and he had a big band. Which is, you're not allowed to do that, you know. But he straightened it. He got it all straightened out and I went to work with his band. He had a good band, too. Then I didn’t want to go out on the road again. I found out how nice it was really being home and playing with a lot of different musicians. But it was a funny thing Ted, when I first left that band then, I was in the band and you'd really ... I knew it was a good band. I knew that, but I didn't know how good it was until I left. Oh, boy, I missed it. I really did. So I would say to a lot of guys, "Well, man, after ten years, what do you expect. You know you've got to miss it." It's pretty lonesome at first. I missed it. I had ten beautiful years in there.”
