Q: “There are very few real geniuses in jazz. There are a lot of great players but the ones who have turned the music around as you say – there are really very few of them around that are that important. That have combined the conception and the ability to play it too.”
A: “I think Coltrane could have done this. Had he stayed on a little longer, he could’ve probably done it, but he didn't complete it. It needed something to complete it and when it didn’t it ended that period. So now you've got musicians struggling to find an end to what he was doing. Cannonball, he brought another era, then there's Clifford Brown and Max Roach, Harry Lynn [ph]. They all brought different aspect of jazz all told. But, you see, jazz is not all as people think it would be, it’s not all Negro, neither is blues. Bob Brookmire [ph] is from Kansas City and he plays much blues as anybody else.”
