Q: “What was New York like when you first hit it?

A: “It was beautiful. In 1946 when I first came East from Lost Angeles, I was with a big band named Johnny Otis and we played at the Apollo Theater, and that was my introduction to New York City and the whole city was in much better shape then. There is no doubt about it. The slum areas that you have now, you didn't have then.”
