Q: ”Is it maybe better to learn how to play trumpet by sitting beside Roy Eldridge or Emmet Barry or somebody or is it better to have a book and a record?”

A: “Well, I tell you, I sat beside Edmund Barry [ph] for a few weeks, playing with Harris Henderson [ph] and that was the first real big-time trumpet player that I worked beside, and I'm telling you, you really had to know what questions to ask.”
