Q: “When there was that sort of transition from swing to bop it must have been an incredibly fertile time to learn…”

A: “It was, really was. Because people were really thinking about music at that time. Big bands, you know, and they wanted to be popular, they wanted to be successful. But popularity was more based upon the quality of the music than on some gimmick, you know. Now, if people sit down and think, 'What can we do to sell 200,000 copies?'”
