Malcolm Higgins
Biography
MALCOLM (MALKY) HIGGINS (trumpeter, vocalist) is originally from the Glasgow area, Scotland where he got his early musical training in military and brass bands, including the famous Cameronian Scottish Rifle Band. He toured Europe for 12 years with that band which was featured at the Tower of London in 1964 where Malky played solo trumpet for HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
Higgins later joined the world famous Clyde Valley Stompers working with that band until emigrating to Canada where he has ever since enjoyed a successful traditional jazz career playing regularly with name trad groups including the Bourbon Street Buskers and the Hot Five Jazzmakers. He has performed frequently at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and returns to Scotland nearly every summer to play with the Sensation Jazz Band as the featured soloist and guest artist.
Malky Higgins was the featured trumpet-player in the “Sound of Toronto Jazz” Concert Series twice, appearing with trombonist Mike Lawson’s Bourbon Street Buskers on February 24, 1997, and as a member of the Paul Grosney Septet for their ‘Tribute to Louis Armstrong’ on February 26, 2001.
