Biography

GEORGE MELLY (vocalist, critic, journalist) was born Alan George Heywood Melly on August 17, 1926 in Liverpool, England and passed away July 5, 2007 in London, England. A colourful and beloved personality, Melly’s singing of jazz and blues was influenced by Bessie Smith. An art aficionado and lecturer - particularly of the Surrealists - Melly’s best known musical associations were with Mick Mulligans’ Magnolia Street Band, John Chilton’s Feetwarmers and Digby Fairweather. Melly was film and television critic for “The Observer” from 1965 – 1973.
