Bob Murphy
Biography
BOB MURPHY (pianist) was born on May 28, 1945 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was performing professionally as a jazz pianist by the time he was 14 years old, and went on to become a prominent player and leader on both the Toronto and Vancouver music scenes. Although his style is his own, he cites Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Cannonbal Adderley, and John Coltrane as having influenced its evolution.
In addition to extensive performance credentials, Murphy has written and produced music for film, video, and commercials, frequently recording his own compositions for national jazz radio shows in Canada. He has frequently worked as a Musical Director for both CBC and CTV network variety programs.
Bob Murphy performed in two “Sound of Toronto Jazz” Concerts at the Ontario Science Centre during the ‘80s: as a member of the (trumpeter) John MacLeod Quartet (with Dave Piltch on bass and Ian Duncan on drums) on February 6 1984 and as leader of his own Bob Murphy Trio (with Neil Swainson on bass and drummer Bob McLaren) on February 3 1986.
