Biography

AL GREY (trombonist) was born June 6, 1925 in Aldie, Virginia and passed away March 24, 2000. Best known for his use of the “plunger” mute technique, after his World War II service, Grey worked with Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton and Count Basie. His technique was a favourite among singers such Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitgerald. In addition to leading his own groups he established a jazz summer camp in his hometown of Pottstown, PA. with instructors such as Max Roach and Jimmy Heath and students Wynton and Delfeayo Marsalis.
