Q: “How did you get onto the [Ben] Pollack band, was that out of Chicago?”

A: “No, I'd joined them in Minneapolis. I went up there to see my girl who is now my wife, you know. And Sterling Bose had gone on a drunk. And they didn't have a jazz trumpet player and I just happened to be in town and I went down to hear the band. And I’d just been down in Louisiana playing with Wingy Manone and a lot of people in the band like Eddie Miller and Ray Bauduc and Nappy Lamare, a lot of those people who came from New Orleans. And so we got to talking and they said, "Well, aren't you … Come down we're having a rehearsal tomorrow, bring your horn and let Pollock hear you play and let's see what happens." So when I came to the rehearsal and they hired me on the spot. That's how I joined the band. I have no idea of going with them or anything.”
