Q” “You mention about playing, that the clarinet and vibes sound good together – you did work for a little while with Benny Goodman, didn’t you?”

A: “Yes, and I loved it. Well, to start with, to me, that was the biggest thrill, probably one of the biggest thrills of my whole life. Because as a kid, I told you the people I really patterned myself, Roy Eldridge and Lester Young, were my idols and Buddy Rich, too, and then came Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie. But Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw also I love them and Benny was the biggest, you know, he was the king of swing.”
