Q: “I have heard – and I don’t know if it’s a fair statement – that when you went into the service, you were a very good musician but your reading was a little on the soft side and I guess because you were a young kid, just not a polished, professional player. When you came out of the service, you were a musician!”
A: “Oh, yeah. Well, we, let's see, that band was together about 2-1/2 years, and looking back, I have to say it's probably the best band I'd ever played with. It was a very polished band. You know, we could ... after a while, we'd get a new arrangement in and we could read it down and phrase together, you know, from having played day and night together so well that we can almost read a thing on sight and almost have it down. And there was a good, a very good, good feeling with the guys. Everybody liked each other and we knew what everybody could do as, you know, some guys were limited in certain ways and other guys were a little more ahead, and … I don't know, it just turned out to be, musically, a very rewarding experience for me.”
