Q: “There was a real bunch of you guys who were some pretty phenomenal musicians. The opportunity was given, I guess because I think Stan Getz was fifteen when he was out with Jack Teagarden’s band and Benny Goodman and everything.”

A: Lee Konitz: “Well, during that war years, a lot of people were leaving their jobs, so we did have an opportunity to play Howard Swiss so-called named bands during that time.”

Interviewer: “Such as whom?”

Lee Konitz: “Teddy Powell was one. I took Charlie Ventura's chair in Teddy Powell's band without the proper credentials at all.”
