Q: “Was it a surprise to you when you hear what [jazz] was really like, as opposed to records and the radio?”

A: “Yeah, when I started hearing live the more improvisational stuff in the big bands, you know, in San Francisco like Blackhawk at the time was the main club and all the great groups used to come there. And I heard the original Miles group, in '57 there. And MJQ in early 50's and a lot of different groups. So it had made a strong impact, you know. So many great guys were playing and Bop City was open then, where a lot of people will go after hours.”
