Q: “One of the great joys in your playing is the sound you get from the piano – your touch. I know musicians, and I can do it too, who will recognize your playing in about three or four notes simply from the sound you produce from the instrument.”

A: “Well, you know, there are enough people around with all kinds of chops that I couldn't touch. You know, if my life depended on it, I couldn't touch what they're doing. But there is a long line of them, particularly in the classical field. And so, you know, always having the … always embracing the philosophy of why should any man work while he has the health and strength to lie in bed. I had spent my life developing a touch and a sound much more than I have a technique.”
