Q: “More than half of your records are live records with the band…”

A: “Absolutely. Well, I feel that an audience in front of you inspires you to play, perhaps, a little over your head because you're not concerned with the mystery of recording. What you are concerned with is trying to impress an audience and a microphone just happened to be there. And sometimes it comes out really great because you got a great audience in front of you. And when I record, I will tell my engineers that if the mistakes are in there, that's the way it was in the club, let it be out in the air, because then you find out that people are not infallible men. Like Diz [ph] can just make a mistake or Miles can make a mistake or I can make a mistake or whoever. But it's real, it happened and what's the sense of cutting it out and putting in a perfect take in? Let the people know that you're human; you can make a mistake because the mistake in itself is usually good. It's not really bad, so why cut it.”
