Q: “Do you know what was funny that I noticed when I saw you playing the other night? Something would be going on and you’d look over at Victor Lewis and he’d be smiling and I think most of the time, it was during piano kind of things. It was as if you were saying ‘did you hear that?’ and he was nodding like ‘yeah, I told you so’.”

A: Bobby Hutcherson:  “Yeah, lots of ... you know, I feel what's really important while you're playing is to acknowledge something that's going on and you know, special little things that happen, you know. Little nuances that go on. You know, because it's good to not only be involved in what's going on when you're playing but also to cheer the other person on. You know, let him know, you know, "Wow, you know, hey, all right." You know, turn around and say, "Oh, yeah. I was listening. You know, I want you to know I wasn't, you know ... I am not taking it for granted. I'm not just standing. You know, I really heard what you did, you know."

Interviewer:  “Some recognition, sure.”

Bobby Hutcherson:  “Yeah, right. So then at that point, you know, with everybody, it becomes a team up there, you know.”
