Q: “I’d like to talk about the philosophy of the group. It is a contemporary group, there’s no doubt about that, and yet at the same time you have such tremendous respect for the roots of the music and the old tunes and brightening them up and making it contemporary even though the material is old. You do select very carefully though, don’t you?”
A: “Yeah, we're traditionally oriented in the sense that we do have tremendous respect and interest in the older styles, but we don't believe in copying all records. I think that if that's all traditional jazz becomes, then it's sort of end of the line. You've got to inject new ideas. And one of the reasons for our different instrumentation is we wanted to get away from the standard trumpet-clarinet-trombone-frontline type of thing. I think that has just about been squeezed dry, you know, that sound.”
