Q: “I think [Jelly Roll Morton] was one of the more important arrangers in jazz. The way he could get sounds out of a little band was quite amazing – he was a very important arranger and composer, and a great piano player too!”

A: “What it Horton has, he could distribute into a band and it's tremendous, right? You know, the trouble is that we sometimes take a person out of context tag of sort. We judge him with 1980 ears instead of saying, "Well, what happened in '22 or '23 or '24 when he was recording and then take a look at what else is going on and it's sad, though. I mean, he was so far ahead of everything.”
