Q: “Your playing is distilled – there isn’t a note that doesn’t need to be there…”

A: “I try to concentrate and get lost in it and say what I'm going to say and that it has something to do with that tune, and I came up at an era where the music was understood by the people and that stayed with me. I mean, there are some players. For example, on sax where I heard a couple, Jay McShann. I understand everything he's doing. I mean, he comes out of that era and I came out of it.”
