Q: “You’ve been an active, professional musician for sixty years now – can you think of any one particular moment where everything was right? Yourself and everybody else on stage with you and the situation and the piano you had to play was right and everything was the moment? Have you had that one great musical moment?”

A: “Oh, yes. I'm sure I've had more than one, but I can recall some blue note records that I made. One called 'Yellow Dog Blues' on which everything fell into place. It just satisfied me. I can recall doing things with Sidney Bechet where everything was just ... The hot five with Wild Bill Davison when he wasn't wild around Bechet because he's very tame, but we had some good dates.”
