Q: “You probably build up a great deal of endurance in the studio situation…”

A: “A lot of experience and it's just a different kind of thing. No two situations are the same and it's a matter of knowing what to do. It's a matter of knowing what you should do to fit in besides the written instruction because they can't write everything. They can't write the phrasing. They can't write the nuances. They can't write the interpretation and so it depends on you to ... just like for an actor to take these words on the paper and bring them to life and make them live. And so it is with the music. And that's where the experience comes in knowing what kind of a situation it is and what you should do about it.”
